Pak hackers target city businessman, pile hatred

CHANDIGARHNareshGarg, a city-based trader, was dismayed when he found a Pakistani flag screaming at him on his website's homepage. Many pro-Pakistan, anti-India and anti-army slogans were also written on it.

He wondered what went wrong with his system until he was made aware of the growing trend. It was the handiwork of cyber criminals who while sitting in Pakistan had hacked his website. Naresh is not alone. There are many like him who are getting a shock of their lives as they encounter such an unexpected happening.

Earlier, these cyber criminals used to make only phone calls to trap gullible people and dupe them of their hard-earned money. But, they have now gone a step ahead, hacking the official websites of Indian businessmen.

Recently, three shopkeepers in the busy market of Sector 20, which is also known as technology hub of the city, became the target of the hackers. Cyber experts reckon his hacking as an attempt of criminals to spread hatred among communities and to disturb communal harmony of the country. Interestingly, the hackers got very active on this Republic Day but Chandigarh police are finding it difficult to locate the IP (internet protocol) addresses of the sender's computer.

"We were totally shocked over these cyber attacks. Our company's website was corrupted and anti-nation comments were written there on the homepage and we were unable to open other links. The hacker had introduced himself as Wasim Gujjar and he had written expletives against Indians and the country," said Garg, the victim, who runs a laptop and hi-tech accessories shop in Sector 20.

"We are using the best anti-virus software but this attack was really serious. It took four days to retrieve our contents back," added Garg, who is also the president of Sector 20-market association. Over 72 hours have passed since the attack.

"It seems to be an attack by a Pakistan hacker. The victim filed a complaint at SSP office and it has not been marked to us. Earlier, we received similar complaints but nothing has come out of them. These attempts are to disturb peace," said an inspector-ranked official of the cyber crime cell. Sumit Bhasin, another victim, said, "We approached local beat officers but they failed to understand. We dialed the police control room and they advised to file a complaint with the SSP. We sent the complaint through e-mail to SSP as it was an off in police headquarters on January 26."

The hacker group Anonymous has briefly shut down a website belonging to the US Justice Department, following a warning by the Homeland Security about an imminent 9/11-style cyber attack.

The hacker group Anonymous has briefly shut down a website belonging to the US Justice Department, following a warning by the Homeland Security about an imminent 9/11-style cyber attack.

The Saturday attack by the group against the US Sentencing Commission (USSC) website has been explained as a kind of revenge for the government’s prosecution against the deceased American dissident blogger Aaron Swart.

The group briefly replaced the USSC’s front page with a letter which claimed that they had accessed secret data at the US Justice Department and threatened to publicize the information unless the US reformed its sentencing laws to make them more proportionate to crimes.

The attack comes after Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano warned on Thursday against the looming threat of a major cyber attack and urged immediate action to prevent a “9/11 in the cyber world.”

According to FBI’s Criminal, Cyber, Response, and Services Branch, the bureau is investigating the cyber attack on the USSC website.

Also in a video posted online, the hackers slammed the government's prosecution of Swartz, who faced a maximum sentence of 31 years in prison and fines of up to USD one million on charges of using the computer networks of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to steal over four million articles from JSTOR, an online archive and journal distribution service.

On January 12, the 26-year-old prominent computer prodigy was found dead in his apartment in the New York borough of Brooklyn.

Brooklyn’s chief medical examiner ruled the death a suicide by hanging, but no further detail was available about the mysterious death.

Last year, Swartz openly criticized the US and the Israeli regime for launching joint cyber attacks against Iran.

The blogger was also vocal in criticizing Washington’s so-called targeted killing operations carried out by US assassination drones in Yemen, Somalia, Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Swartz was critical of monopoly of information by corporate cartels and believed that information should be shared and available for the benefit of society.

In a memorial website, Swartz’s family described his death as “the product of a criminal justice system rife with intimidation and prosecutorial overreach.”

ZIONAZI T Troops Swap Guns for Computers as BUTTHURT AGAINST ISRAEL INCREASES WITH ATTACKS ON PALESTINE

At an army base outside Tel Aviv, soldiers sit in front of screens glued to scrolling colored computer code, keyboards at the ready to deflect attacks.
They’re Israel’s cyber defense team in training, among the uniformed men and women learning how to stalk hackers and pounce on virtual enemies as the state shields everything from ministry websites to the systems running the Tel Aviv stock market.
“To become one of the leading countries in cyber security, we have to act quickly to ensure that everyone will understand Israel is on its way to becoming a leading cyber-nation,” Rami Efrati, head of the civilian division of the National Cyber Bureau, said in an interview at the year-old agency this month. “Cyber security can be a national growth engine.”
OPERATION JERICHO A WELCOME FOR THE NEW ZIONIST  GOVERMENT  DUE IN 5 WEEKS
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who expects to be tapped to form Israel’s next ruling coalition later this week, has been channeling resources to the intensifying subterranean war through fiber optic cables between Israel and its enemies.
The Israeli leader has repeatedly pointed to Iran and its allies, warning of the threat of cyber-attacks last month. Iran in turn accused Israel and the U.S. of trying to sabotage its nuclear program in 2011, while last year a virus wreaked havoc with Iranian computer systems.
“Cyber has three dimensions: intelligence, defense and offense,” said Amos Yadlin, the former military intelligence chief who now heads the Institute for National Security Studies at Tel Aviv University. “Anyone who deals with any one of the dimensions must understand the other two. You can’t defend if you don’t know how to attack.”

Most Attacked

Israeli government networks are among the most highly attacked in the world, with daily assaults numbering in the tens of thousands, the Soufan Group, a New York-based security adviser, said in a Jan. 14 report.
Two months ago, civilian computer technicians sat in front of a bank of screens in a Jerusalem government building deflecting millions of attempted attacks on Israeli government websites as the country’s air force struck the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip and rockets hit Israel’s towns and cities.
Palestinian militants in Gaza consider cyber part of their resistance to Israel. “Our professional hackers never sleep,” said the spokesman for a pro-Hamas group who goes by the name Abu Mujahid. Islamic Jihad, which like Hamas is considered a terrorist organization by Israel, the U.S. and the European Union, said in November its operatives hacked into 5,000 mobile phones belonging to senior Israeli army officers.

Israeli Hacker

On the other side, an Israeli hacker calling himself “Yourikan” published credit card numbers and expiration dates belonging to customers of the Palestinian Internet service provider Palnet, according to eSecurity Planet. Two months earlier, the Israeli defaced more than 90 Iranian sites, according to an interview he gave to Infosec Island, an online community for network professionals who manage security, risk and compliance issues.
“A virtual exchange of blows has been around in the Middle East for over a decade,” said Gabi Weimann, a Haifa University professor who wrote “Terror on the Internet: The New Arena, The New Challenges.”
The army’s defense unit was established as the threats grow increasingly sophisticated and follows the founding of an offensive division in the intelligence corps that Soufan said is reportedly comparable to the American National Security Agency in technical expertise, if not in size.

Intelligence Funding

The military has increased the budget for the intelligence unit believed to be charged with cyber offense to 2 billion shekels ($537 million), the Ynet news site said in November. In October, Channel 2 television said the army wants to double the number of soldiers in the unit. The army declined to comment.
The National Cyber Bureau started operating as part of the Prime Minister’s Office in January 2012, the same month the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange and El Al Israel Airlines Ltd. were paralyzed by a Saudi hacker, who also published credit card information of thousands of Israelis on the Web.
It won’t be long until cyber-attacks have the ability to determine a war, Tel Aviv University’s Yadlin said at a seminar in September. “I can’t say if it will be 10 years, 20 years, or less than that.”

Two men who carried out cyber attacks for the Anonymous hacking group have been jailed.

Two men who carried out cyber attacks for the Anonymous hacking group have been jailed.
Christopher Weatherhead, 22, of Northampton, and Ashley Rhodes, 28, of Camberwell, London, were jailed for 18 months and seven months respectively.
The two men carried out distributed denial of service, or DDoS, attacks which paralyse computer systems by flooding them with online requests.
The ones they attacked included payment site PayPal, costing it £3.5m.
Co-defendant Peter Gibson, of Hartlepool, was given a six-month sentence, suspended for two years.
Another defendant, Jake Birchall, 18, from Chester, will be sentenced on 1 February.
'You're being stung'
The sentences were handed down at Southwark Crown Court and are thought to be the first convictions for DDoS in the UK.
Weatherhead and Rhodes were found guilty of conspiring to impair the operation of computers between 1 August 2010 and 22 January 2011.
Gibson was deemed to have played a lesser role in the conspiracy and admitted his part, as did Birchall.
The websites targeted by the cyber attacks were chosen by Anonymous, as part of what it called Operation Payback, because the hackers did not agree with their views.

Other companies hit by the attacks included Mastercard and Visa.
Southwark Crown Court had previously heard that PayPal was attacked after it decided not to process payments on behalf of the Wau Holland Foundation, an organisation involved in raising funds for the Wikileaks website.
Visitors to the affected websites in this case would be directed to a page displaying the message: "You've tried to bite the Anonymous hand. You angered the hive and now you are being stung."
Handing down his sentences, Judge Peter Testar said: "It is intolerable that when an individual or a group disagrees with a particular entity's activities, they should be free to curtail that activity by means of attacks such as those which took place in this case."
Prosecutor Joel Smith said theirs was a "persistent campaign" designed to "cause damage, financial losses and press exposure".
'Ideological twizzle'
The judge said the DDoS attacks had not been particularly sophisticated.
"What was sophisticated was the lengths taken to protect the identities of those involved," he said.
"The investigators are really to be commended for breaking down the wall of anonymity that was put up in order to prevent the activity of these conspirators being interrupted."
The Ministry of Sound estimated the cost of the attack on its sites as £9,000, while the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry's costs were more than £20,000 and the British Phonographic Industry's more than £4,000.
The financial impact on MasterCard and Visa were not revealed to the court, although Weatherhead once boasted online at having caused £1m worth of damage to MasterCard.
Gibson suggested attacking the website of singer Lily Allen, now known by her married name of Lily Cooper, as a possible target to Rhodes at one point. He agreed with the idea but the attack never went ahead.
Judge Testar told the court: "They got themselves into a bit of an ideological twizzle.
"On one hand, they wanted to attack her because she had taken a stand against breach of copyright. But on the other hand, they didn't like the idea of attacking artists."
